Step-By-Step Mounting : Permobil C350

When mounting to a wheelchair, please consider:

  • Wheelchair maneuverability
Typical mounts should do not extend beyond the wheelchair width, but avoiding other wheelchair-mounted components (ie: brakes, trays, armrests and footrests) may change this.
  • What you don't see (transfers, transport, etc)
Take into account all the different activities involved. Mounting should not interfere with transfers and transportation - this includes swing-away foot rests and access to tie-downs.
  • Best access
To get around other wheelchair-mounted components (such as a fixed lap-tray or arm rests and transfer bars) may require extra components. Sometimes, it might have to increase wheelchair width.

This step-by-step mounting is specific to the Permobil C350, with Uni-Trac rails

Other Permobil wheelchairs will have identical instructions - but keep in mind each wheelchair user's needs are unique and they use their chairs differently.
Ideally, it is easiest to mount when a wheelchair is not occupied.

Tools:

  • A 3/16" or 5mm Hex or Allen Key
    (provided with every Mount'n Mover)
  • Optional:

  • A camera/camera-phone for documenting the set-up
  • Writing utensil and paper for documentation
  • A flat head screwdriver (for removing the cover)

Components for mounting:

All hardware for mounting to wheelchairs is provided with these components.
  • Wheelchair Adapter Plate (WC-AP2)
  • Wheelchair Bracket:

Familiarizing yourself with the person's needs & Locating the mount position

These instructions specifically deal with a Permobil C350 Wheelchair with Uni-trac.

It is easiest to mount to a wheelchair when the chair is unoccupied

Determine the mounting side for best access. (consider avoiding the wheelchair controls)
In this example - we have mounted to the left side of the chair.

For clarity, the arm-rest is folded up.

For this type of chair, we are going to mount to the Uni-trac.
Before we begin mounting, try to see if there is anything obstructing the mount and post.

Step 1/6 : Removing the cover

Using a tool (we use the 3/16" Hex Key in this picture ), remove the cover that is on the end of the Uni-Trac rail.
If installed correctly, it should "pop" out easily. If not, you may need to use a flat-head screwdriver to pry it out.

Once the cap is removed, set it safely aside.
You will need this cap for re-assembly.

Step 2/6 : Setting up and orienting the WC-AP2

To mount to the Uni-Trac, we will use the Wheelchair Adapter Plate 2 (WC-AP2).
Remove the WC-AP2 and the hardware bag that has:

  • four black socket cap screws (M6x1.0 x 14mm), and
  • four square nuts (M6x1.0).
Orient the WC-AP2 for best access, then insert the screws into the trapezoidal shape shown in the picture.
Three of these screws will be in holes, and the last one should align with a vertical slot.
Thread these screws just into the nuts - these will be easier to insert into the Uni-Trac if they are loose.

Step 3/6 : Inserting the WC-AP2 to the Uni-Trac

Align the square nuts with the two channels in the Uni-Trac.
Insert them one at a time, and slide the WC-AP2 to the desired location.
You may have to tighten or loosen the screws to make this process easier.

Alternatively, you can insert the nuts first - and screw the plate down after.

Step 4/6 : Position and secure the WC-AP2

Slide the WC-AP2 into the desired position along the Uni-Trac, then
Using the 3/16" (or 5mm) Hex Key, tighten all four screws by turning them clockwise.

Step 5/6 : Replace the cover

Using the cover (that we removed in step 1) - push it back in to the Uni-Trac

Step 6/6 : Attaching a Wheelchair Bracket

If the user typically is seated at a tilted angle, it would be more appropriate to use an Adjustable Wheelchair Bracket (WB).
In this example, we attach a Solid Wheelchair Bracket (WB2)

Screw the WB2 down using the 3/16" Hex Key and the two short bolts that are packed with the WB2

There are multiple positions to mount the WB - choose the position that works the best.

Done!

Congratulations!
You should now have a set-up that looks like this.

The next step is to insert the post, and attach the mount!
These steps are not covered in this document
