Step-By-Step Mounting : Quickie 2

When mounting to a wheelchair, please consider:

  • Wheelchair maneuverability
Typical mounts should do not extend beyond the wheelchair width, but avoiding other wheelchair-mounted components (ie: brakes, trays, armrests and footrests) may change this.
  • What you don't see (transfers, transport, etc)
Take into account all the different activities involved. Mounting should not interfere with transfers and transportation - this includes swing-away foot rests and access to tie-downs.
  • Best access
To get around other wheelchair-mounted components (such as a fixed lap-tray or arm rests and transfer bars) may require extra components. Sometimes, it might have to increase wheelchair width.

This step-by-step mounting is specific to the Quickie 2 pictured

Many Quickie wheelchairs will have almost identical instructions - but keep in mind each wheelchair user's needs are unique and they use their chairs differently.
Ideally, it is easiest to mount when a wheelchair is not occupied.

Tools:

  • A 3/16" Hex or Allen Key
    (provided with every Mount'n Mover)
  • A 7/16" Wrench
(Or any adjustable wrench to turn a 7/16" bolt head)
  • Optional:

  • A camera/camera-phone for documenting the set-up
  • Writing utensil and paper for documentation

Components for mounting:

All hardware for mounting to wheelchairs is provided with these components.
The components listed below are what is used in this example.
  • Wheelchair Clamp
    for 1" Round Tube (WC-R1)
  • Wheelchair Mounting L-Shaped Angle Extender
    (WC-LAE)
  • Solid Wheelchair Bracket (WB2)

Please allow yourself an hour for mounting and troubleshooting

To save time, read these step-by-step instructions in its entirety before mounting to a wheelchair.

Familiarizing yourself with the person's needs & Locating the mount position

These instructions specifically deal this particular Quickie 2.

For this wheelchair we know we will have to clamp to the round tubing.

Determine the mounting side for best access. (consider the users dominant hand and reach)

In this example:
The seat cushion has been removed for clarity
We decide to mount on the right side of the chair.

Before we begin mounting, please consider anything that might obstruct the wheelchair bracket and post.

Common things to consider:

  • Wheelchair brake access
(make sure to test the full swing of the brake lever)
  • Arm-rests, and
  • Swing-away footrests.

Step 1/3 : Dry Fit Components

Before we tighten any components down completely - we recommend performing a " Dry Fit ".
We make sure all the components actually fit and work before any of the bolts are fully tightened and torqued down.

Dry Fit Attempt #1

Here we try and clamp the seat-tubing directly under the cushion

Unfortunately - you can see here that with a post inserted, the brake lever cannot fully function

Dry Fit Attempt #2

We now attempt to clamp to the upright footrest receiver.
Notice how the wheelchair brakes are already in its "down" position - and does not obstruct the lever movement.

Checking to ensure that foot-rest swing-away is possible in this configuration.

Option:

We could choose to use the Solid Wheelchair Bracket (WB2) in its alternate position, but in the proceeding steps we used the (WC-LAE) instead.

Step 2/3 : Attaching the clamp

Since we decided to use the WC-LAE,
LOOSELY attach the WC-LAE to the Wheelchair Clamp for 1" Round Tube (WC-R1) like shown in this picture.

Using the 3/16" Hex Key, tighten both bolts down.
At this point, you can tighten these bolts down to full torque

The picture on the left shows the WC-LAE mounted. Notice how it does not obstruct the motion of the wheelchair brake lever.

Step 3/3 : Attaching the Solid Wheelchair Bracket

The WC-LAE are packaged with four screws and two locking nuts.

Attach the Solid Wheelchair Bracket using the two longer screws and the two locking nuts.
You will need to use the 3/16" Hex Key and a 7/16" wrench (or equivalent) to tighten them.

Done!

Congratulations!

You should now have a set-up that looks like this.
The video clip shows that you can remove/attach the footrest hanger even with the Mount"n Mover attached!

The next step is to attach the mount!
These steps are not covered in this document
